Calar Alto Computer News for January to June 2000

1. Hardware 

• The Calar Alto Network has been improved with the addition of 3 Giga Switches. Now 2.2m, 3.5m and Laboratory are connected with 1Gbps bandwidth. 1.23 is connected with 100Mbps
• Laboratory has now a more switched network allowing more bandwidth for end users
• Jobs for allowing 10 modems for remote PPP connections has been started.
  

2. Software

• New IRAF version without the Y2K bug. Version is 2.11.3
• StarOffice 5.1 suite installed for general use at Solaris
• Secure shell (ssh) installed
• Obseving accounts obs1a to obs3b have been unified, protecting configuration files
• New Data Base for Night Reports has been built on the system. All night reports will be stored and can be consulted any time
• Meteorological data has been inserted into EPICS1
• NTP (Network Time Protocol) has been installed on all instrumentation computers
• ds9 installed

3. Personnel

• We have a new coleague on the Computer group. Ricardo Hernández started up on May 29th
