Nice fireball over North Africa on October 5th

Last night, on October 5th, at 04:51 UT, a beautiful fireball streaked across the sky over North Africa.

The detectors operated by the SMART Project at the Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), and La Sagra (Granada) observatories recorded this beautiful event.

Furthermore, three of the outdoor cameras at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería also witnessed the fireball.

The data for this event, extracted by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA-CSIC) after his preliminary analysis, are as follows:

  • Type of event: cometary
  • Initial speed: 256,000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 123 km
  • Final altitude: 69 km

The videos recorded by the external cameras of the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería are shown below.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
