During October, the cameras of the SMART Project have recorded several luminous phenomena crossing our skies, including bright fireballs of cometary origin and a striking meteor which, despite not being bright enough to qualify as a fireball, has produced some particularly interesting images.
These events were observed from several stations distributed across Spain, including Calar Alto Observatory (Almería), whose sky-monitoring systems make it possible to study their trajectories and main characteristics.
Below, we take a look at some of the most remarkable observations recorded this month, together with their images and the results of the available analyses.
October 6th 2026
Last night, on October 5th, at 04:51 UT, a beautiful fireball streaked across the sky over North Africa.
The detectors operated by the SMART Project at the Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), and La Sagra (Granada) observatories recorded this beautiful event.
Furthermore, three of the outdoor cameras at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería also witnessed the fireball.

Two fireballs were registered by the detectors operated by the SMART Project at various observatories across Spain.
It is worth mentioning that the event on September 20th occurred during sunset, with ample natural light, making it even more spectacular.
The object on September 19 was recorded at 02:14 UT, while the one on September 20 was recorded at 18:47 UT.
The outdoor cameras operated by the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería captured both events.
September 11th 2026
Three phenomena as beautiful as interesting could be observed from Calar Alto Observatory in Almería during the nights of September 10th and 11th. First of them, September 10th, at 00h29 UT, was a nice fireball that could be registered from the SMART Project's detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Seville, Otura (Granada) and Mazagón (Huelva) observatories.
The second, also on September 10th, turned out to be a phenomenon that is difficult to observe and specially to study, as it happens in a very short lapse. It was a sprite caused by a large storm that occurred that night.
Finally a really impressive super-fireball on September 11th, iluminated the night at Calar Alto Observatory. This event was also registered with the SMART Project's detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Seville, Sant Celoni (Barcelona) and Mazagón (Huelva) observatories.
All of them were also registered with the external cameras of Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.
August 24th 2026
Last night, August 23, at 03:21 UT, a very bright fireball streaked across the skies over the Alboran Sea.
The event was registered by the SMART Project's detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Mazagón (Huelva), Huelva, and Seville observatories.
Two of the external cameras at the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería were also able to track this beautiful object.
