Even the clouds couldn’t hide the October 25 fireball!

During the first part of the night on October 25, at 01:31:37 UT, a bright fireball crossed the clouds over the province of Jaén heading east, leaving behind a brief flash of light.

The object was recorded by the SMART Project detectors operating from the observatories of Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Seville, Otura (Granada), and Mazagón.

This beautiful fireball was also captured by one of the outdoor cameras operated from the Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC) made the preliminary analysis with next conclusions:

  • Type of event: asteroidal
  • Initial speed: 54.000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 86 km
  • Final altitude: 50 km

Below is the video of the fireball, captured with the external camera operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería:

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
