This year we are having many nice Perseids.
On August 12th at 21h56 UT, and on August 13th at 04h13 UT, two bright Perseids were registered with the SMART Project’s detectors opertated at Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada) and Seville observatories.
The external cameras at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería also could follow these events.
Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), PI of the SMART Project, has achieved the preliminary analysis. His conclusions are:
Perseid of August 12th:
- Type of event: cometary
- Initial speed: 213.000 km/h
- Initial altitude: 126 km
- Final altitude: 82 km
Perseid of August 13th:
- Type of event: cometary
- Initial speed: 216.000 km/h
- Initial altitude: 122 km
- Final altitude: 77 km
Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
