Beautiful fireball crosses the Algerian Republic

At 04:03:20 UT on October 23, 2025, a bright fireball was seen crossing Algeria eastward, leaving behind a small trail of light.

This object was recorded by the SMART Project detectors operating at Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Seville, and Mazagón.

One of the outdoor cameras of the Calar Alto Observatory also captured this beautiful event.

The preliminary analysis was carried out by Professor José María Madiedo of the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC). His findings are as follows:

  • Type of event: Cometary
  • Initial velocity: 231,000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 122 km
  • Final altitude: 73 km

Below are videos recorded by the Calar Alto Observatory’s outdoor cameras.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
