Bright fireball above Valencia on October 9th 2022

pathAt 02h24 UT of last October 9th 2022, a bright fireball overflew Valencia province (mid-east Spain).

The object was registered with SMART Project’s detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), Ayora (Valencia), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada) and La Sagra (Granada).

Some of the external cameras located at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería also followed this event.

As stated from the preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), SMART Project PI, this fireball had an asteroidal origin. A rock detached from an asteroid, entered in our atmosphere at a speed of about 86.000 km/h.

The luminous part of the event started at an altitude of 93 km above Valencia province ground. The object moved then southwestward and finished at an altitude of 33 km above the ground.

The trajectory above Valencia this fireball followed is shown on the left picture.

Below are the videos of the external cameras  operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
